WASHINGTON — It has been 15 years since Jennifer Lopez donned that revealing Versace dress at the 2000 Grammy Awards, catching the world’s attention. Now, we know it was that dress that helped inspire the creation of Google Image Search.
Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, explained the back-story in a blog post, saying that people wanted to find more than just text, particularly after that green dress made its debut.
“At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: JLo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born,” Schmidt wrote.
Before that development, Schmidt said searches would turn up text and blue links rather than images.
