Vitamin D deficiency more closely linked to diabetes

WASHINGTON — New research links low vitamin D levels with diabetes, regardless of how much a person weighs.

The findings indicate there’s a direct correlation between vitamin D and a body’s ability to metabolize glucose.

The research published by the Endocrine Society in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests you may be able to lower your risk of both diabetes and obesity by eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of activity — outdoor activity — so the sun can stimulate your body into making vitamin D.

Previous studies have found people with low levels of vitamin D, which helps absorb calcium and maintain bone and muscle health, are more likely to be obese.
