How to recycle your Christmas tree

WASHINGTON — Whether you dispose of your Christmas tree on Dec. 26 or after the New Year, many will rely on county or city services to help them.

Below is information about how to disposes of trees in the area

D.C.

In D.C., holiday tree and greenery collection runs between Dec. 28 and Jan. 10. The city asks residents to remove all ornaments, tinsel and other decoration before putting the tree where trash and recycling is collected.

Maryland

Montgomery County continues tree collection year-round. To have your tree collected, place it on the curb by 7 a.m. on the morning of recycling collection.

Virginia

In Fairfax County, residents can recycle live Christmas trees (less than 8 feet tall) on normal collection dates. For larger trees, contact your collector for recycling instructions.

Christmas trees may also be recycled during the first two weeks in January at either the I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 Landfill Complex. There is a small processing fee of $1 per tree.
