Mets agree to minor league deal with Johnny Monell

NEW YORK (AP) — Catcher Johnny Monell has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets.

The 28-year-old Bronx native hit .238 with four homers and 24 RBIs in 68 games last year with Triple-A Norfolk and Albuquerque. He has a .264 average in 709 minor league games over eight seasons.

In his only major league experience, he was 1 for 8 with the San Francisco Giants in 2013.

As part of Thursday’s agreement, Monell was invited to New York’s major league spring training camp.
