WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have captured their sixth Senate seat that had been held by Democrats — and that’s enough to give Republicans control of the Senate next year.

The GOP will now have full control of Congress during the final two years of President Barack Obama’s second term. And their House majority will be stronger.

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan lost to state House Speaker Thom Tillis in North Carolina, a state that Republicans have long been targeting to help win back the Senate. Total spending in the tight Senate race topped $100 million.

Republicans held on to a Senate seat in Kansas as Pat Roberts turned back a challenge from independent Greg Orman.

And Democrats failed to pick up a Republican seat in Georgia as Michelle Nunn lost to David Perdue.
