WASHINGTON (AP) — The District of Columbia’s last appointed attorney general is resigning to pave the way for its first elected attorney general to take over.

Irvin Nathan submitted his resignation to Mayor Vincent Gray on Wednesday. Nathan will step down Nov. 17.

Democrat Karl Racine won the District’s first election for attorney general on Tuesday, defeating four other candidates. Racine is a managing partner at the prominent Venable law firm.

In a statement, Gray says Nathan “has done a stellar job” and leaves the office “in excellent shape.”

Chief Deputy Attorney General Eugene Adams will serve as interim attorney general until Racine takes office in January.
