Montgomery County requests more state funding for schools

ROCKVILLE, Md. – With enrollment rapidly increasing every year, officials with Montgomery County Public Schools are asking for a substantial increase in state funding.

“The growth that we are experiencing is extreme and we need help,” said Superintendent Joshua Starr Tuesday.

Since 2007, enrollment rose by more than 16,000 students.

It is expected to grow by another 11,000 throughout the next six years.

“We know that if we don’t figure out how to deal with the bursting of the seams in Montgomery County Public Schools, that we will not be able to give our children the instructional spaces that they deserve,” said Starr.

According to Starr, the additional money would help speed up the timeline on 36 construction projects, including renovations and expansions.

The Maryland State Legislature will consider the proposal during its next session which starts in January.
