Stocks finish mixed…Oil prices slip again…Twitter doubles revenue, but user growth a concern

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have ended the day mixed, with sliding oil prices and more disappointing news on the global economy weighing on shares. The S&P 500 slipped three points to close at 1,961, with energy stocks taking the biggest hit. The Dow finished with a gain, edging up 12 points to finish above 16,817. The Nasdaq also rose, adding two points to 4,485.

NEW YORK (AP) — The price of oil continues to drop amid mounting evidence of rising supplies and weak demand. But benchmark U.S. crude ended up losing just a penny today, closing at $81.00 a barrel in New York after starting the day sharply lower. It peaked at $107 a barrel in June.

NEW YORK (AP) — Twitter’s revenue more than doubled in the third quarter, outpacing expectations. But the company’s financial report is a mixed bag overall. Twitter posted a third-quarter loss of $175 million, while adjusted earnings matched expectations at 1 cent a share. To appeal to more people, Twitter has tried to make it easier for people to sign up, and its user base grew 23 percent. But investors don’t appear impressed and Twitter shares are down 8 percent in extended trading.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Amgen says its earnings fell in the third quarter on charges from an ongoing restructuring effort. But the biotech drugmaker’s adjusted results still beat Wall Street expectations, and it’s raised its full-year earnings outlook. Amgen earned $1.24 billion, or $1.61 per share. Excluding one-time charges associated with job cuts and closing locations, the company would have earned $2.30 per share.

NEW YORK (AP) — Dunkin’ Donuts plans to begin offering a croissant-doughnut hybrid next week. But the company says please don’t call it a “Cronut.” That name was trademarked more than a year ago by a New York City bakery. Dunkin’ Donuts’ “Croissant Donut” will be available nationally for a limited time starting Monday. Dunkin’ has several new offerings in the pipeline after reporting disappointing quarterly sales last week and warning it might struggle to make its long-term growth targets this year.
