MIAMI (AP) — Ten Cuban migrants have been rescued and a search continues for three more after their raft broke apart miles from Miami.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a report that several people were in the water and clinging to debris Monday shortly after 10 a.m.

Two pleasure crafts rescued five people while Miami-Dade Fire Rescue found three more. Two other rafters swam ashore to Elliott Key.

The migrants told rescuers that they’d left Cuba about 10 days ago and their raft fell apart Sunday at about 10 p.m. They had been in the water for about 12 hours when they were found.

Three of the men rescued were taken to Miami hospitals for treatment.

There has been a surge over the last year in Cuban migrants attempting to reach the U.S.
