PHOENIX, N.Y. (AP) — A central New York high school has received a million-dollar donation from a couple who were sweethearts there in the 1930s.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bitly.com/1pL986e ) reports J.C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix will use the gift from the estate of Robert and Roberta Hurd to fund college scholarships.

The school was called Phoenix High School when the Hurds were students there.

They married a few years after graduation and lived in Baldwinsville, New York. They later retired and moved to Florida.

Robert Hurd was a tool-and-die worker and Roberta Hurd was as an accountant. He died 1992 and she died this past March.

Few knew that the couple had saved enough money to leave such a generous gift to their school.
