FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The fire victim who was seen on video being carried to safety by a Good Samaritan as flames exploded says he just froze as the fire burned his home.
Robert Wells reunited with the Good Samaritan, Thomas Artiaga, on Monday, two days after the blaze, and thanked Artiaga for his efforts. In the video taken by a bystander, Artiaga is seen carrying Wells over his shoulder.
The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1zjp3ST) that Artiaga was not the only person to come to the 73-year-old Wells’ aid. Anita Meza told the newspaper her husband, Art, ran inside the burning home, grabbed Wells and brought him out to the back patio through a glass door.
Firefighters say the blaze started in the garage of the apartment Wells shared with three relatives and caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.
