NYPD releases video of smoke canister suspect

NEW YORK (AP) — The NYPD has released a surveillance video that shows a man emerging from a sidewalk vault, hurling a smoke canister into a trendy Manhattan restaurant and then disappearing underground again.

The suspect is about 20 years old with blonde wavy hair. He’s wearing black gloves, a black baseball cap and a multi-colored T-shirt.

The device was hurled at an outdoor seating area Friday evening at Bar Pitti in Greenwich Village. It sent up a cloud of pink smoke but no one was injured.

The man came out of one of the many heavy yellow doors on New York City sidewalks. They serve as emergency subway exits and let electrical workers access underground lines.

Police ask anyone with information to call 1-800-577-TIPS.
