Lady Lara wins Belmont’s Pebbles Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) — Lady Lara rallied to win her U.S. debut, the $200,000 Pebbles Stakes for 3-year-old turf fillies on Monday at Belmont Park.

Eighth in the early stages, Lady Lara swung extremely wide for the stretch run. She surged by the pacesetting Distorted Beauty to win by a half-length for her third victory in 14 starts. The Irish-bred filly who started her career in England paid $21.20, $10.80 and $7.50 for the 9-1 upset. Junior Alvarado was aboard for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott as Lady Lara ran the mile in 1:35.31 over the course rated good.

Distorted Beauty returned $8.20 and $5.70 while Walk Close paid $6.70 to show.
