NEW YORK (AP) — Bloomberg Philanthropies has launched a challenge inviting U.S. cities to develop temporary public art projects that enhance cultural and economic activity.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s charitable foundation made the announcement Monday.

Mayors in cities with populations of 30,000 or more can submit proposals beginning Monday for visual, performing arts and multimedia projects.

Finalists will be selected in February. At least three cities will be chosen in May. Each will receive $1 million to develop projects over two years.

Applicants will need to demonstrate their ability to create projects that strengthen public-private partnerships.

Bloomberg says public art projects bring new energy to cities, attracting more visitors and economic activity.
