BERLIN (AP) — Three German photojournalists have been arrested in southeastern Turkey while covering Kurdish protests against the Islamic State group.

A German foreign ministry spokeswoman said Sunday the three freelance photographers had been arrested by Turkish police.

The spokeswoman said the German Embassy was in contact with the three and local authorities to “clarify the situation.” She spoke on condition of anonymity because she wasn’t authorized to have her name used for attribution.

The three reporters were arrested Saturday in Diyarbakir and one of them, Kietzmann, had also tweeted about their detention.

Protests against the Islamic State group’s onslaught on the Kurdish town of Kobani in Syria turned violent in Turkey last week and led to several deaths.
