The volcano erupted again Friday, a day after releasing an ash cloud that reached 2.5 kilometers (1.9 miles) into the sky. Sinabung has erupted sporadically since 2010 after being dormant for 400 years. Its alert status remains at the third-highest level, advising people nearest the volcano to be ready to evacuate if conditions worsen. Lying in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes, more than any other country.
