LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — A bald eagle plucked by a paddler near the James River has died.

The bird was rescued last Friday near the Monacan Bridge in Campbell County. It was unable stand when it arrived at the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro.

The center’s director of outreach, Amanda Nicholson, said veterinarians found the bird dead on Sunday. They suspect toxins found in pesticides likely killed the eagle.

The News and Advance (http://bit.ly/Zrf1i0 ) says an infectious disease could also be to blame for the eagle’s death.

Radiology tests revealed no fractures, no internal bleeding and no recently consumed lead.
