NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are giving up an early gain and turning lower in midday trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 45 points, or 0.3 percent, to 16,967 as of noon Eastern time Monday. It was up as much as 89 points in early trading.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell seven points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,961. The Nasdaq composite lost 27 points, or 0.6 percent, to 4,446.

Energy stocks had some of the biggest declines as the price of crude oil fell. Marathon Petroleum fell 2 percent.

H&R Block fell the most in the S&P 500 after the tax preparation company said its latest attempt to sell its banking business has stalled.

U.S. government bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.42 percent.
