MADRID (AP) — Spanish police say two surfers have died after struggling with the currents off the northern beach resort of Zarautz.

Emergency services were called Sunday morning after other surfers had pulled the two onto the beach, police said. One surfer had run into trouble and the second went to assist but also foundered, a spokesman said. Resuscitation efforts were not successful.

The Basque coast facing the Bay of Biscay is renowned among surfers. The beach at Zarautz, 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of the French border, is popular because of the type of waves it offers. It also hosts a well-known surfing school.

The police spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to be cited by name, said the victims had not yet been identified.
