Stocks rose sharply on Friday after a surge in hiring by U.S. employers added to evidence that America’s economy is strengthening, even as other countries stumble. Nearly every kind of stock rose, small and large and across industries. All ten sectors in the S&P 500 ended higher.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 208.64, or 1.2 percent, to 17,009.69.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 21.73 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,967.90.

The Nasdaq composite rose 45.43 points, or 1 percent, to 4,475.62.

For the week:

The Dow is down 103.46 points, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 14.95 points, or 0.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 36.57 points, or 0.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 433.03 points, or 2.6 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 119.54 points, or 6.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 299.03 points, or 7.2 percent.
