GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — Students, parents and teachers in suburban Denver vow to keep fighting after a school board refused to back off plans to review the content of Advanced Placement U.S. history courses.

The Jefferson County Board of Education backed off from language promoting patriotism and downplaying social disorder, but its conservative majority went ahead Thursday night with plans to review the curriculum.

The elective course’s framework was recently changed to give greater attention to the history of North America’s native people before colonization. Critics say it downplays European settlers’ success in establishing a new nation.

The board agreed to include students on the review committee, but opponents say that isn’t enough because board members will still try to change the history course to suit their views.

One parent who demonstrated along a busy boulevard Friday afternoon says she’s frustrated that the board didn’t engage in conversation with the people who turned out against the proposal.
