James River cleanup nets trash, other debris

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) — Volunteers filled up more than 450 garbage bags with trash during a regional cleanup of the James River.

Volunteers also removed tires, a bicycle, appliances, furniture, toys and construction materials from the river and connected streams.

The Progress-Index (http://bit.ly/1mFOMz0 ) reports that the 15th annual James River Regional Cleanup was held Sept. 13 at 14 sites between Lynchburg and Newport News. The event drew more than 700 volunteers.

The cleanup kicked off the James River Advisory Council’s first week-long celebration of the river.
