The Associated Press

U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Monday after recovering most of an early slide. Investors were nervous about the latest geopolitical unrest, this time in Hong Kong as police clashed with protestors demanding democratic reforms in the former British colony.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 5.05 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,977.80.

The Nasdaq composite slipped 6.34 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,505.85.

For the year:

The Dow is up 494.56 points, or 3 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 129.44 points, or 7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 329.26 points, or 7.9 percent.
