MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee’s Jonathan Lucroy set the single-season record for the most doubles by a catcher when he hit his 46th on Saturday night.

Lucroy broke the major league mark previously established by Texas’ Ivan Rodriguez in 1996.

The Brewers catcher doubled to the left-field wall against Chicago Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada with one out in the fifth. He received a standing ovation from the sellout crowd at Miller Park after easily getting to second base.

The hit scored Carlos Gomez to give Milwaukee a 2-1 lead, but Lucroy was doubled off second when Aramis Ramirez flied out to right.

Lucroy has hit 53 doubles overall this season, but seven came while he was in the lineup as a first baseman. His latest double tied the Milwaukee Brewers’ franchise record of 53 set by Lyle Overbay in 2004.

The Brewers started backup catcher Martin Maldonado at first base, and Lucroy was the catcher on Saturday because the team wanted to give him a chance to match the record.

Typically when both play, Maldonado catches and Lucroy plays first.

“We’re talking about an all-time record, so I think it is important,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said before the game.
