Hilltoppers seek defensive improvement vs. Navy

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Western Kentucky coach Jeff Brohm has been planning for Navy’s triple-option offense since the spring.

The strategy of preparing months in advance for the explosive scheme began with predecessor Bobby Petrino, and the Hilltoppers succeeded in limiting the Midshipmen to 107 yards rushing in last year’s meeting.

WKU (1-2) spent the bye week on additional preparation that Brohm hopes will pay off again Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Midshipmen (2-2) rank third nationally in rushing at 345 yards per game, a huge challenge for a Hilltoppers defense that’s allowing 508.7 yards and 41 points per game. Those averages rank 116th and 114th respectively among 125 FBS schools, which made last week’s break very timely in terms of correcting things for Navy.
