Police identify G.W. student who died Friday

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police have released the name of a George Washington University student who died on Friday.

Metropolitan Police Department Officer Paul Metcalf confirmed on Sunday that the undergraduate student who was found dead in an off-campus apartment in Washington was 20-year-old William Gwathmey.

In a statement Saturday, the university said the student was pronounced dead Friday morning at a local hospital. The university did not identify Gwathmey but said he was a junior studying business.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

A police report obtained by WTOP Radio (http://bit.ly/1pn9kr5 ) says the student went to various nightclubs and consumed alcohol then went back to an apartment. That’s where an acquaintance found him unresponsive.

According to the police report, investigators believe the student consumed cocaine at some point.
