BALTIMORE (AP) — The family of a Maryland girl whose arm was partially paralyzed during child birth has been awarded $1.7 million.

Doctors induced labor on Uriah Evans in December 2011 at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

During delivery, a lawsuit filed by Evans says her baby’s left shoulder became lodged and that doctors failed to use proper birthing techniques to correct it.

The lawsuit says Evans’ daughter, Zyaira Smith, suffered “catastrophic injury” to her left arm and shoulder because of negligence, and has permanent, partial paralysis.

The Daily Record reports (http://bit.ly/1DaaPDl ) that a jury awarded Zyaira’s family $3 million on Sept. 5. That amount was reduced to $1.7 million because of a calculation error.

A hospital spokeswoman denies that doctors were at fault and that there was no evidence of negligence.
