WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leaders are postponing a vote on a short-term spending bill as they weigh President Barack Obama’s request for the authority to train and equip Syrian rebels battling Islamic State militants.

A top GOP lawmaker and a congressional aide said Wednesday that the vote was delayed. They spoke on condition of anonymity to freely discuss the House schedule.

The House had been scheduled to vote on the bill on Thursday. Instead, he said the House will vote next week.

Legislation is needed by Sept. 30 to keep the government operating. The bill would fund the government through Dec. 11, provide $88 million to battle the Ebola outbreak and extend the authority of the Export-Import Bank to continue helping foreign buyers purchase U.S. exports until June 30.
