Driver pleads guilty in school bus crash

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A school bus driver has pleaded guilty to leaving four children unattended on the vehicle, which drifted across a road and hit a bus stop.

Sixty-one-year-old Arturo Roberto Harris of Clinton pleaded guilty to leaving an unattended child and reckless endangerment in Prince George’s County Circuit Court on Monday.

Prosecutors say on April 7, Harris left four children on a school bus to use the restroom at High Point High School in Beltsville. Police said the bus drifted across Powder Mill Road, then hit an elementary school-aged child waiting at a bus stop.

The child who was struck sustained minor injuries; the children on the bus were not hurt.

Prosecutors say they will ask that Harris be sentenced to 30 days in jail. Sentencing is set for Nov. 7.
