US firm faces case over Youth Olympics gym mats

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — An American gymnastics equipment supplier faces disciplinary action for sending unauthorized mats to the Youth Olympics in China.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) says it opened a case against Jefferson, Iowa-based manufacturer AAI “for selling unapproved gymnastic mats.”

The federation says the case involves landing mats provided to the Youth Olympics in Nanjing last month.

FIG says “all mats were recalled and replaced with equipment obtained at the last minute from a gymnastic center in Tianjin.”

The federation says mats checked in Nanjing “differed from those tested for market in March 2012.”

FIG says a disciplinary commission decision “will be rendered shortly.”
