12 staffers hurt in melee at New York psych center

MARCY, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say 12 staff members have been injured in a melee at a New York psychiatric center.

Correction officials say in a news release issued late Wednesday night that a group of inmates attacked staffers and other inmates inside the Central New York Psychiatric Center in the town of Marcy earlier in the day.

Two staff members suffered head injuries and were taken to a hospital.

Officials say it all began when five or six inmates started attacking staff members in a kitchen area, using kitchen items as weapons.

As that fight was taking place, officials say a similar situation was unfolding on the floor above.

Outside law enforcement responded to the scene and was able to restore order.

No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
