US sweeps Iran in USA Volleyball Cup final

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Olympian Matt Anderson had 20 points on 20 kills and the U.S. national team swept Iran on Saturday night to win the final match of the USA Volleyball Cup.

Taylor Sander added 15 points in the 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 victory at UC Irvine. The match was originally scheduled to be played at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, but had to be moved because of damage caused by a water main break in late July.

The U.S., ranked No. 4 in the world, won three of the four matches played over the past week in Southern California. Iran, ranked No. 11, claimed a 3-2 victory Friday night at San Diego State.

Both teams were using the series as a tuneup for the FIVB World Championships this month in Poland. The United States and Iran are in the same group for pool play at the championships.
