Iran takes third match of USA Volleyball Cup

SAN DIEGO (AP) — After falling in two previous matches to the U.S. men’s national team, Iran earned a 3-2 victory in the USA Volleyball Cup on Friday night.

Amir Ghafour had 26 points in the 24-26, 26-24, 25-27, 25-20, 15-9 victory at Viejas Arena at San Diego State. The four-match exhibition series concludes Saturday night at UC Irvine.

Opposite Carson Clark had 23 points on 19 kills and a block for the United States, which is ranked fourth in the world. Iran is ranked No. 11.

The teams are using the exhibition series to prepare for the FIVB World Championships which start later this month in Poland.

The final match was originally scheduled for UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, but had to be moved because of flooding caused by a water main break that spilled 20 million gallons of water onto campus on July 29.
