Yankee Stadium adding metal detectors

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankee Stadium will add metal detectors at some gates next week as part of Major League Baseball’s security plan.

The Yankees made the announcement Friday. The metal detectors will be in place starting Tuesday night when the Yankees host the Houston Astros.

MLB has been working with the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate safety procedures. All 30 big league ballparks will have metal detectors by the start of next season. Some stadiums already have put them in place.

Fans who go to Yankee Stadium starting next week will be asked to take cellphones and large metal objects out of their pockets before walking through the detectors.

Fans who don’t want to go through the detectors can instead be checked by security personnel with a hand-held device.
