CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) — A broken water main is flooding homes and creating a gaping hole in the road in a Maryland neighborhood.

The 8-inch main broke around 3 a.m. Friday on Larchmont Avenue in Capitol Heights. A section of the road there buckled badly and is unpassable.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said about 35 customers are affected and that three homes have experienced flooding.

Residents reported brown, foul-smelling water bubbling out of toilets and through the plumbing, leaving more than a foot of water in basements.
