Swimming advisory issued for Va. Beach oceanfront

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Health officials have issued a swimming advisory for parts of the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

The advisory prohibits swimming and wading from 22nd Street to 37th Street. An earlier advisory from 37th Street to 70th street was lifted on Thursday. The advisories were issued after testing conducted by the city’s health department showed bacteria levels in the water exceeded state water quality standards.

Signs posted on the beach in the affected area will warn that swimming and wading in the area is prohibited until further notice.

Virginia Beach has conducted the water tests since the mid-1970s. Health officials will continue testing the site until the water quality meets the state standards. The city says when the sampling test results meet the standards, the signs will be removed.
