WASHINGTON — Southpaws can rejoice — Wednesday is International Left-Handers Day.
First celebrated in 1992, it’s a day that promotes awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed, according to the official Left-Handers Day website.
The day points out how left-handers have to constantly adapt to a right-handed world and encourages people to rework their offices and homes to be more lefty-friendly.
If you favor your left hand, you’re in good company. Buzzfeed points out some famous lefties include President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, Paul McCartney, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Prince Charles and Bill Gates.
There are many fun facts when it comes to life as a lefty, as pointed out on the Left-Handers Day website.
- Left-handers adjust more readily to seeing underwater.
- Left-handers excel in sports such as tennis, baseball, swimming and fencing.
- Left-handers usually reach puberty four to five months after right-handers.
- One in four Apollo astronauts was left-handed.
