WARREN, Mich. (AP) — A suburban Detroit mayor says a woman has died in a vehicle that was stranded in about 3 feet of water after heavy rains caused widespread flooding in southeastern Michigan.

Warren Mayor James Fouts told WWJ-AM Tuesday that the woman apparently died of cardiac arrest. It was not clear when she died.

Numerous roads have been closed by flooding in the Detroit suburb where 5.2 inches of rain fell Monday. Fouts says roughly 1,000 vehicles are abandoned in the city.

The Associated Press left a message for Fouts, who has described the flooding as “overwhelming” and “catastrophic.”

A storm dumped more than 6 inches of rain in southeastern Michigan overnight, making several roads and highways impassable. The state warned commuters against taking to the roads Tuesday morning in affected areas.
