USS Mahan to deploy to Arabian Sea

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The USS Mahan is leaving for Virginia on a five-month deployment to the Middle East.

The Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer is scheduled to leave on Monday.

The Navy says that after the ships transits through the Mediterranean Sea, it will enter the Arabian Gulf and surrounding waters to conduct maritime operations and strengthen partner nations’ maritime capabilities.

This will be the ship’s first deployment since a sailor was shot and killed aboard the ship by a civilian gunman, who was later killed by Navy security forces.

The Navy says the sailor who died provided security at Naval Station Norfolk and was trying to save another sailor when the fatal shots were fired. The Navy has not released its investigation into the shooting.
