New curfew takes effect in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) — Children and younger teenagers in Baltimore will be spending more time in doors under a new curfew law that takes effect this weekend.

Imposition of the tighter curfew, among the nation’s strictest, was to begin Friday night.

City council members in the crime-ridden city voted overwhelmingly for the new curfew in June.

The new curfew requires children under the age of 14 to be indoors by 9 p.m., and teenagers between 14 and 16 years old to be inside by 10 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends.

Violators will be taken to local curfew centers staffed with counselors, and their parents could face fines of up to $500.

A existing curfew requires children under 17 to be indoors by 11 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on weekends.
