NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Hampton Roads Transit is conducting its first, massive public outreach effort to see what kind of public transportation options residents who live in the region want.

Officials say the idea is to develop a transit plan based on that feedback, then figure out what kind of funding or governance changes might be needed to support it.

In other metropolitan areas, regional transit systems typically have a dedicated source of funding that allows them to plan and pay for major projects. In Hampton Roads, each city in the system uses money from its general fund to only pay for service within its borders.
