WASHINGTON (AP) — If you litter in Washington, be prepared to pay the price.

The Metropolitan Police Department will begin issuing $75 tickets to pedestrians caught tossing trash on public streets, waterways, or someone else’s property.

Officers in the sixth district, which is east of the Anacostia River, and the fourth district, which covers an area east of Rock Creek Park are now issuing tickets.

Throughout August, litterbugs in the rest of the city will receive a written warning. But come September police will start issuing citations citywide.

Tickets can be appealed to the Office of Administrative Hearings.

Police officers will continue to issue $100 tickets to any drivers caught littering.
