How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Tuesday

The stock market closed with a modest loss as investors waited for a series of big economic reports later in the week. Nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 fell. Only telecommunications stocks rose.

The Dow Jones industrial average sank 70.48 points, or 0.4 percent, to 16,912.11.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 8.96 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 1,969.95.

The Nasdaq composite fell 2.21 points, less than 0.1 percent, to 4,442.70.

For the week:

The Dow is down 48.46 points, or 0.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 8.39 points, or 0.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 6.87 points, 0.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 335.45 points, or 2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 121.59 points, or 6.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 266.11 points, or 6.4 percent.
