WASHINGTON — A Southwest Airlines plane from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport made an emergency landing in Columbus, Ohio, Tuesday night after the pilots received a warning about smoke in the front cargo hold.

A Southwest Airlines flight 424 was en route from Baltimore to Chicago’s Midway Airport, a Southwest Airlines representative told 10TV in Columbus.

The plane diverted to Port Columbus International Airport to make an emergency landing.

Southwest Flight 424 safely landed around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. There were no injuries.

The 49 passengers and five crew members got off the plane via the emergency evacuation slides, 10TV reported.

Port Columbus vice president of business development and communications David Whitaker says passengers were safely evacuated, and the plane was inspected. No problems were found.

Emergency responders found no evidence of smoke or fire in the front cargo hold of the plane, but the aircraft is out of service pending a full safety check, according to 10TV.
