ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Officials in Annapolis are about to start construction on a new, $35-million water treatment plant.

The Capital of Annapolis (http://bit.ly/Wn26fQ ) reports officials will have a groundbreaking ceremony Monday. The new plant will be adjacent to the current city water plant, which was built in 1929. Public works crews have known for years that the current plant on Defense Highway has severe mechanical, structural and electrical problems and is on the brink of failure.

The new plant is expected to be finished by December 2015 and will provide 8 million gallons of drinkable water per day.

The city provides drinking water for 36,000 residents, the Naval Academy and St. John’s College.
