Mitchell gets 1st career ARCA win

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Mason Mitchell won Saturday’s ARCA Racing Series event at Chicagoland Speedway for his first career victory on the circuit.

The 19-year-old Mitchell finished second in four of the previous six races, but he passed Justin Boston for the lead with five laps to go and was never challenged the rest of the way. Mitchell, from West Des Moines, Iowa, started ninth.

“We couldn’t stick on the bottom all day,” Mitchell said. “Halfway through the race, I realized we carried more speed up top. We started picking up speed, and I didn’t look back.”

Boston finished second, followed by Matt Tifft, Will Kimmel and Cody Coughlin in fifth.

Mitchell, who was coming off a second-place finish at Winchester on July 6, unzipped his suit in Victory Lane to reveal a Superman T-shirt. His average speed was 109.976 mph.
