SAN DIEGO (AP) — A coroner has determined that a man whose charred body was found in a homeless camp during a San Diego County wildfire died from natural causes, not from injuries related to the blaze.

The body of 47-year-old farm worker Adolfo Velasco was found in thick brush May 15 while the fire raged through parts of Carlsbad.

The San Diego County medical examiner says Velasco suffered from chronic alcoholism and heart disease and had a high level of alcohol in his system when he died.

The Los Angeles Times reports that no soot was in his lungs, which would have been present if he was alive while the fire was burning.

The so-called Poinsettia fire burned more than 600 acres and destroyed five homes and 18 apartments. No deaths have been attributed to the fire.
