WASHINGTON – A National Security Agency police officer was injured when a man fled a checkpoint at Fort Meade and then led police on a chase along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway Wednesday morning.
The chase along the southbound lanes of the BW Parkway began about 6 a.m.
Maryland State Police say 32-year-old Darnell David Hawkins Jr. left the Maryland Live Casino and then drove onto NSA property, where the chase started.
Police say Hawkins was stopped by NSA officers as he approached a checkpoint on Route 32, which travels through Fort Meade in Anne Arundel County. Hawkins drove off from a staging area, injuring an NSA officer and nearly striking a barricade, according to the Associated Press.
The driver went the wrong way in the southbound lanes of the parkway, police say.
The tires on his car blew out and police were able to stop him. The police activity shut down one southbound lane of the parkway for about an hour.
Hawkins was charged with attempting to elude police, according to the Associated Press.
