Fatal accident at Va. campground investigated

CLINTWOOD, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal campground accident in which a vehicle hit two women sitting near a fire pit.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the 2009 Jeep Cherokee went into the Pound River after it struck the women at the Pound River Campground in Dickenson County.

Geller says in a news release that witnesses told investigators the vehicle’s accelerator stuck as it was pulling into a campsite.

Sixty-year-old Norma Jean Kendrick of Clintwood died at the scene. Sixty-one-year-old Georgia Mullins of Clintwood was treated for minor injuries.

Geller says the vehicle’s driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital in Bristol. She was identified only as a 62-year-old Clintwood woman.

The accident occurred Thursday night.

No charges have been filed.
