Tigers manager Ausmus feeling better after illness

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus is feeling a little better after a stomach illness set him back for a day.

Ausmus was running the team for Saturday night’s game at Kansas City.

Tigers bench coach Gene Lamont guided the club Friday night to a 2-1 win over the Royals.

“I ate a green apple and by the time I got here, I was feeling it,” Ausmus said. “It was in a bowl next to a moldy orange. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it.”

Ausmus said he watched Friday’s game on the television in the visiting manager’s office.

“I did, laying on the floor here,” he said.

Ausmus also said All-Star designated hitter Victor Martinez has been doing upper body exercises and hopes to return after the break.

Martinez left a game on July 4 with back irritation. He will be at the All-Star game next Tuesday in Minnesota and take part in the festivities.
